Step-by-step lookup

  1. Step 1. For tax/good standing status: go to the Texas Comptroller (mycpa.cpa.state.tx.us/coa/) and search by entity name.
  2. Step 2. For formation details: go to SOSDirect (direct.sos.state.tx.us/corp/acct/ssearch.asp) for the SOS filing records.
  3. Step 3. Enter the entity name. Texas search is partial-match, so abbreviations may work.
  4. Step 4. Review the Taxpayer Status — ‘Active’ means franchise tax is current. ‘Not Active’ is a red flag.
  5. Step 5. On SOSDirect, click ‘Filing History’ to see all amendments, mergers, and agent changes.
  6. Step 6. Check both systems — an entity can be active with the SOS but delinquent with the Comptroller.
